RDU Sting falls to 1-2 for the season, trying to regroup

(Raleigh, NC)

The holiday weekend did not stop the fans from coming out as the Lowcountry Fire rolled into Raleigh, North Carolina to take on the RDU Sting, who were looking to rebound from losing their last game. Both clubs gave an impressive start to a very competitive match up, trading baskets for the opening four minutes.

Lowcountry Brittany Young(Francis Marion) and Rachel Potts(Charleston Southern) made their mark on the game very quickly connecting with a handful of three pointers

The RDU Sting, introduced a new backcourt squad, bringing more speed to the line up, which was needed to keep up with the run and gun style of some of the teams in the WBCBL Atlantic Conference.  The Lowcountry Fire lead by Brittany Young (Francis Marion), keyed on wing play as they took advantage of quick hitters around the paint.

Treasure Johnson ( UNC Wilmington) started the game connecting with a pair of 3 pointers to open the game with Quanita Goins (Wake Tech) and Christina DeWitt(UNC) combining for 8pts and 10 rebounds.  Defense proved to be a factor as the Fire forced 13 Sting turnovers, slowing down the high scoring RDU offense, to take a first half lead 27-26.

Lowcountry Brittany Young(Francis Marion) and Rachel Potts(Charleston Southern) made their mark on the game very quickly connecting with a handful of three pointers in the top of second half, as the Sting struggled to get Pam Butler(Albany State) involved.  The fourth quarter performance remained the same with the exception of 6 fouls called against the Sting, giving the Fire the double bonus at the foul line. Brittany Phillips (Louisburg College) contributed 6pts, along with Pamela Butler(Albany State) who added 4pts with two reverse layups to make it a 1pt game.

In the final minute, the Sting with a chance to win only down 58-57 decided to milk the clock down to 10 seconds before attacking the basket.  The Fire instructed not to foul dropped into a zone then pounced on Treasure Johnson, forcing a pass to Goins who in turn made a desperation pass only to have it deflected as the horn sounded.  Poor shooting and turnovers in the first half was just too much for the Sting to overcome.  The Sting will be on the road for the next two games before returning home to take on the Virginia Lady Stallions on June 18th, 2011.
