RDU Sting downs Newberry Panthers in 2011 WBCBL Opener, 85-83

(Newberry, SC)
The RDU Sting made the trip down to Newberry South Carolina for their first test of the 2011 WBCBL season against the Newberry Panthers.  The Panthers were running on all cylinders, jumping out to a 12pt lead 5 minutes into the 2nd quarter

while the RDU Sting, struggling to get into altdouble digits, looked rattled at times with blown defense assignments all over the court.  The Panther's long  range game was impressive hitting numerous three pointers as they were left wide open all over the perimeter.  The scond quarter proved to be the opposite as Pam Butler(Albany State) became the Sting's answer, connecting for a handful of three pointers. Heroic play by Christina Dewitt(UNC), playing above the rim, got some put backs of her own. Shaquita Shaw (State Fair College) teamed up with Rhadja Page(Voorhees College) for a little two on two to take advantage of the Panther backcourt attacking the paint to keep the game in reach at half time.

In the third quarter the Sting, displaying a fierce Shell Drill, clamped down on the Panthers offense and made a 10pt run, only to see the Panthers abandon the perimeter game and revert to a lane assault, to jump back out to a 12pt lead again. Both teams traded baskets until there was 3:30 left in the game. Then the Sting, displaying their own version of the full court press, wrecked havoc on both ends of the floor cutting the lead 83-80 with 20.14sec left in the game.

The Panthers trying to seal to win, missed a crucial free throw. A Christina Dewitt rebound started the break, Rhadja Page found Alicia Person(ECU) in the corner for the go ahead 3pt to knot it up 83-83.  Immediately after a Panther inbound, Page made a timely steal of her own, and connected with a lay up to give the Sting their first lead of the game 85-83.  With .30sec left on the clock, the Panthers had no option but to heave in an unsuccessful pass that was intercepted by Pam Butler as time expired.
After the game Coach Burnside had this to say to the ladies "We had eight of nine players contribute points and that is what it takes to win ball games. Everyone is responsible for scoring, defending, rebounds, and steals, and you did that today.  Good Job, I am proud of you."
